Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunctions, including genital prolapse, increases with age. They are more frequent in women and may cause symptoms with potential negative impact on the quality of life. Objectives: To evaluate, in an elderly women cohort, the prevalence of vaginal symptoms and sexual matters related to genital prolapse and their impact on their quality of life. Methods: It is a descriptive observational study in women who attended at the Engenhoca Primary Care Unit, in Niterói, to receive the vaccination for Influenza. Patients with 60 years of age or more were included, and those presenting auditory or cognitive deficits were excluded. All participants informed their age and were invited to answer the Brazilian version of the International Consultation in Incontinence Questionnaire — Vaginal Symptoms (ICIQ-VS) questionnaire. Results: 93 women were vaccinated and 62 were included in the study. The most prevalent symptoms were vagina too dry (41,9%), vagina too tight (32,3%), and dragging pain in the abdomen (22,6%). Six women (9,7%) referred vagina too loose or lax, 4 (6,5%) referred a vaginal bulge, and 3 (4,8%) could feel or see the bulging. Nine women (13%) referred negative impact of vaginal symptoms on their daily activities. 51 women weren’t sexually active, but for only two of them the reason for it were the vaginal symptoms. Four women referred that those symptoms interfered on their sexual life. The calculated scores for quality of life impact were low. Conclusions: The most prevalent vaginal symptoms are related not only to prolapsed genital, but also to other pelvic dysfunctions, such as genitourinary syndrome of menopause. Most of the women weren’t sexually active. Negative impact on quality of life was observed, although scores suggest it is not so significant.
